Clé Newsletter
   Clé Newsletter, April 1999

1. Clé AGM

26 companies sent representatives to the Clé AGM. The Articles of Association were amended to allow for new non-voting members to be drawn from companies associated with publishing. This move was welcomed, as was the considerable progress with World Book Day. New members attending were Ordnance Survey of Ireland (Malachy McVeigh), Fish Publishing (Clem Cairns) and Mermaid Turbulence, (Mari-Aymone Djebi).

2. Copyright

Copies of the new Copyright Legislation are available from the Government Supplies Agency. The legislation will be debated and there will be an opportunity to suggest amendments. Clé is awaiting legal opinion on the full implications for book publishers and will send this to all heads of companies in the near future. In addition there will be a Clé Training Course on the implications for contracts on September 1st. Once again this course has been almost fully booked.

Copyright Directive

The European Commission is still examining a draft revised text for the Directive (copies can be had from Cle); the final amended proposal is due after Easter. The FEP Newsletter reports that the Commission does not seem too ready to compromise on its current position. However in attempt to reach a solution acceptable to all parties, FEP has written to all Commissioners. The text of this letter is also available to members.

3. Training Programme

Three training courses have been held since last January - all were attended - numbers ranged from 12 to 16 and feedback has been extremely positive. The combination of surveys and planning seems to be working well. Please do let me know if there are any courses you would particularly like to have next year or indeed any that you feel should be given on an annual basis.

April 14th:Managing Freelances has been postponed to mid-May. Details of precise date will follow shortly.
May 12th:Effective marketing Strategies for Britain will go ahead with Liz Grieve and Claire Thomson from Turnaround as tutors. This course is already half full so I would strongly advise anyone who hasn't already booked to do so now.

Openings on the Cle training Sub-committee
Training is one of our most valuable services. The work consists of meeting two or three times a year, brainstorming for training programmes and going to meet FAS. All admin, other planning, relations with agencies etc. is done from the Clé office. If you're interested give Orla Martin a call as soon as possible for further details.

4. World Book Day

The campaign is now up and running and to date we have met with great enthusiasm from the trade and the media. In brief, Irish Independent will carry the adult vouchers from April 17th to May 3rd .in the Irish Independent, Saturday & Sunday Independents and the Evening Herald. They will also do print ads across all three titles and a radio ad, voiced by Brendan Kennelly, which will mention the vouchers and the Irish published promotion. Orla Martin sent out schools packs to all the booksellers and participating publishers and point of sale orders have been received from eighty-five shops independent booksellers and the Easons chain. Iarnrod …ireann and DART are funding a Read 'n' Rail Poster which will go in Connolly, Euston, Cork & Limerick as well as the provincial stations and on all trains. Dublin Bus is funding a Bus 'n' book poster for the interior of all the buses. The Late Late Show are planning an Irish published give-away of ten books per person form the Irish published promotion. The Arts Show is also on board. Well known authors will be found in windows in Cork Limerick Dublin and Galway. Independent Newspapers will hand out free copies on World Book Day in Cork Limerick, Galway and Dublin. There is a launch planned for April 22nd in the Dublin Writers' Museum- further details will be available nearer the time and all are welcome. So far this looks like a much-improved World Book Day thanks to lots of hard work by everyone.

5. Frankfurt 1999

The Clé office will be liasing directly with the Fair organiser due to the retirement of Arnie Aretz. Arnie was presented with a bottle of aged Irish whiskey on behalf of all his Irish clients at The London International Book Fair last week. He will be sorely missed. The Clé stand has expanded for the third consecutive year with 13 companies taking part. They are Appletree, Blackstaff, Clo Iar Chonnachta, Cork University Press/Attic Press, ILE, The Irish Times, Mercier/Marino, New Island, The O'Brien Press, Town House & Country House, and Wolfhound Press. The Cle unit will host Mentor and Lilliput on a similar basis to last year. There is still space available on the Cle unit for the last days of the fair if anyone wants to test the Frankfurt waters for the first time.

6. London International Book Fair

Five companies participated on the Enterprise Ireland Stand - Appletree Cork University Press/Attic Press, Wolfhound Press and Mercier/Marino. Brandon/Mount Eagle, Blackstaff, and The Irish Times took tables in the rights centre where they reported steady business but far less passing traffic. New Island, and Clo Iar Chonnachta, and Clé also attended. The number of exhibitors and visitors at this year's book fair was well up on last year - booksellers up 7.9% (including UK and overseas) and exhibitor registrations an unbelievable 41.2%!!
