Blanchville House is an elegant Georgian residence standing in its own grounds, approached by a tree- and shrub-lined private drive. It is beautifully furnished with antiques and has large comfortable bedrooms, all of which are now en-suite and have tea- and coffee-making facilities. The spacious drawing room, with the original wallpaper and service bells, has a TV, grand piano and open fireplace. All the rooms overlook the lovely green countryside.

Evening meals, if booked in advance, are served in the atmospheric dining room and are tastefully prepared with homegrown produce; vegetarian and special diets catered for. A wonderful retreat to return to after a day's sightseeing. Local amenities include golf, tennis, horse-riding, hunting and fishing, as well as flying at the Kilkenny Air Club.

A 10-minute drive from Kikenny, turn right off the Dublin road at Barlow Ford (approximately 3 miles (4 1/2 km) from this point). If in doubt, call for directions. All major credit cards accepted.

Maybe you'll stay in the place described as a pre-Famine wisteria-covered farmhouse -one of several overnight options in Westport, County Mayo. Or maybe you'll opt for the large Georgian mansion just beyond an iron gateway in Ballymote, County Sligo. Maybe you'll stay in one of the other 400 or so accommodations in this revised and expanded version of the book (Bed and Breakfast Ireland) that first hit the United States in 1991. Only an occasional line drawing interrupts the text; and in the back of the 319 page book, regional maps-which include ferry routes-cover the whole of the Irish Isle, from Derry and Belfast in the north to the Dingle Peninsula and Cork in the south.
