Dating from the late seventeenth century, Bow Hall is right in the centre of the charming village of Castletownsend, whose one steep street leads to the harbour and sea. The Vickerys are a delightful retired couple from New York state who have lived here for 17 years and have created a charming home.

The bedrooms are light and spacious, with some American furniture. Breakfast is a grand affair, with home-made sausages and pancakes a particular treat. Good home-cooked dinners are served in the dining room and the large drawing-room-cum-library has floor-to-ceiling bookshelves at one end with a fireplace at the other; all kinds of ornaments and knick-knacks are found throughout the house. The slate-faced front of the house overlooks a very large and immaculately kept walled garden. Smoking only in the drawing room. No pets.

Or maybe you'll opt for the large Georgian mansion just beyond an iron gateway in Ballymote, County Sligo.
