Delphi Lodge

Leenane, Co. Galway

Delphi Lodge is one of the finest sporting lodges in Ireland. Beautifully restored in 1988, this magnificent 1830s country house has a rich history. Set in 1,000 acres with 3 loughs, in a stunning lakeside location, and surrounded by ancient woodlands and towering mountains, the lodge is the ultimate Connemara retreat. The house has antique pine furniture and the bedrooms have lovely views. Originally the sporting estate of the Marquis of Sligo, Delphi is now the home of Jane and Peter Mantle; Jane is a Cordon Bleu cook who specialises in local seafood. The lodge has a strong emphasis on salmon and sea-trout fishing, and Delphi is one of the finest game fisheries in Ireland. The fishing season runs from spring to the middle of October.

Outside the fishing season, the lodge is popular with shooting parties, ramblers and golfers. Horse-riding and hunting can also be arranged. Superb, safe and uncrowded beaches are within 20 minuteís drive, and the lodge is conveniently placed for visiting Westport and all the sites of Connemara. A huge snooker room and a magnificent library are open to guests.

Evening meals are served at a superb old oak dining room table, and the wine cellar is extensive. Not suitable for children. French spoken. No pets. There are 4 charming country cottages available for self-catering; ideal for families.

Owner: Jane and Peter Mantle Open: February-October Rooms: 11 double/twin (private baths)

First class guide to Ireland's bed and breakfast lodging

Bed and Breakfast Ireland reviewed in Chicago Tribune
Maybe you'll stay in the place described as a pre-Famine wisteria-covered farmhouse -one of several overnight options in Westport, County Mayo. Or maybe you'll opt for the large Georgian mansion just beyond an iron gateway in Ballymote, County Sligo. Maybe you'll stay in one of the other 400 or so accommodations in this revised and expanded version of the book (Bed and Breakfast Ireland) that first hit the United States in 1991. Only an occasional line drawing interrupts the text; and in the back of the 319 page book, regional maps-which include ferry routes-cover the whole of the Irish Isle, from Derry and Belfast in the north to the Dingle Peninsula and Cork in the south. Each lodging entry ends with the names of the owners, season of operation and number of rooms. This review refers to an earlier edition of Bed and Breakfast Ireland as is the extract above. The latest edition of Dillard and Causin's Bed and Breakfast Ireland contains even more entries.
