Glenlohane is a superb Georgian country house set in beautiful park grounds with some wonderful old trees and views to the distant mountains. The present owners are direct descendants of the family who built it in 1741. Desmond lived and worked in the United States and Melanie is American, and between them they have combined the very best of modern comforts with the character and atmosphere of the past.

Glenlohane is an informal house with good food and log fires to relax in front of. The large, comfortable drawing room features a square bay window, a superb full-length mirror, baby grand piano, grey marble fireplace and interesting pictures and furniture. There is also a small study filled with books, a dining room and a country kitchen.

A traditional stable yard is attached to the house, where visitors' horses can be housed by arrangement. There are plenty of animals around, and the farm includes sheep and cattle. Guests are welcome to watch the daily farm activities. With notice, riding, or hunting with the Duhallow Hunt, the oldest pack of hounds in Ireland, can be arranged. Fishing is available only 1 km away on the River Blackwater, and there are a variety of golf courses and lovely walks nearby.

Or maybe you'll opt for the large Georgian mansion just beyond an iron gateway in Ballymote, County Sligo. Maybe you'll stay in one of the other 400 or so accommodations in this revised and expanded version of the book (Bed and Breakfast Ireland) that first hit the United States in 1991. Only an occasional line drawing interrupts the text; and in the back of the 319 page book, regional maps-which include ferry routes-cover the whole of the Irish Isle, from Derry and Belfast in the north to the Dingle Peninsula and Cork in the south.
