Gurtalougha House is approached thorough a peaceful avenue that winds for a mile (1.5km) through 150 acres of mature forest. Built in the nineteenth century, the house is situated on the banks of the River Shannon; in the distance can be seen the mountains of Clare and Galway. This is an informal and relaxed house, with huge log fireplaces and antique and comfortable beds, with huge log fireplaces and antique furnishings. The bedrooms are large, with wooden floors and comfortable beds, and one has a balcony overlooking the lake.

Breakfast goes on until noon and is available in be or in front of the fire in the dining room. Michael Wilkinson, your host, enjoys cooking, and all foods are prepared with fresh, wholesome ingredients. There is a wine licence. There are lovely woodland walks with a great variety of wildlife: red squirrels, badgers, otters and kingfishers. Boats and windsurfboards are available at no extra charge, with swimming from the jetty and croquet on the lawn. There are 4 golf courses, 2 hard tennis courts, pony trekking and a sailing school close by. No pipes or cigars in the dining room. Pets by arrangement.
