South Lodge

PORTMARNOCK

This very attractive compact brick building stands just inside an impressive gateway right next to the golf course, beyond which is the sea. It has been the family home of Pat and Colin Burton for the last thirty years, and just three years ago they started a bed & breakfast business. To offer the best accommodation possible they cleverly redesigned the house, creating a small wing for themselves and rebuilding the first floor - which now provides four charming bedrooms. The bedrooms are spacious, furnished and decorated with simplicity, and have beamed pitched, attic like ceilings. Some of the rooms overlook the golf course, and three are en suite. They have a TV, hairdryer, tea and coffee, books and packs of cards. There is a sitting area in the breakfast room, which has views of the golf course beyond the small attractive garden, and a nice place to enjoy fine weather is on the patio in front of the house.

South Lodge, built in 1873, was a gate lodge to the James family home, of distiller fame, now the Portmarnock Links Hotel. This is a fabulous location for the golf lover, has great access to Dublin (bus stop just outside) and the airport, and the lovely sandy beach of Portmarnock is two minutes away. No credit cards, smoking or pets.

OWNER Pat & Colin Burton OPEN All year except for Christmas ROOMS 4 double/twins; 3 en-suite TERMS Single Supplement.

First class guide to Ireland's bed and breakfast lodging

Bed and Breakfast Ireland reviewed in Chicago Tribune
Maybe you'll stay in the place described as a pre-Famine wisteria-covered farmhouse -one of several overnight options in Westport, County Mayo. Or maybe you'll opt for the large Georgian mansion just beyond an iron gateway in Ballymote, County Sligo. Maybe you'll stay in one of the other 400 or so accommodations in this revised and expanded version of the book (Bed and Breakfast Ireland) that first hit the United States in 1991. Only an occasional line drawing interrupts the text; and in the back of the 319 page book, regional maps-which include ferry routes-cover the whole of the Irish Isle, from Derry and Belfast in the north to the Dingle Peninsula and Cork in the south. Each lodging entry ends with the names of the owners, season of operation and number of rooms. This review refers to an earlier edition of Bed and Breakfast Ireland as is the extract above. The latest edition of Dillard and Causin's Bed and Breakfast Ireland contains even more entries.
