A comfortable, modern, detached house set back off the main road on the edge of town. The bedrooms are clean and comfortable, and are furnished in a modern style with fitted wardrobes; all have hairdryers and electric blankets. All rooms except one are now en-suite. The TV lounge, which has a piano, is spacious and comfortable, with fires lit on chilly days. Mrs O'Sullivan has been in business for over 8 years, and is happy to assist guests with itineraries for local sightseeing. Whispering Trees is a good base for touring, and amenities include golf, fishing, sailing and walking. Breakfasts include home-baked bread and scones. Tea- and coffee-making facilities in conservatory. No smoking in the dining room. No pets. Visa and Access cards accepted.

Or maybe you'll opt for the large Georgian mansion just beyond an iron gateway in Ballymote, County Sligo. Maybe you'll stay in one of the other 400 or so accommodations in this revised and expanded version of the book (Bed and Breakfast Ireland) that first hit the United States in 1991. Only an occasional line drawing interrupts the text; and in the back of the 319 page book, regional maps-which include ferry routes-cover the whole of the Irish Isle, from Derry and Belfast in the north to the Dingle Peninsula and Cork in the south.
