OWENEA County Donegal

Even though it is over 9 feet tall, this impressive pillarstone often goes unnoticed as it is partly hidden behind a derelict cottage to the south of the river at Owenea bridge, which is 1 mile north of Ardara. It is remarkable for its uniformity and measures approximately 4 by 21/2 feet in plan. While a few comparable examples occur around the Mourne Mountains, monoliths on this scale are fairly rare in northern counties. The finest are found in Kildare and in parts of south-west Munster, some standing to heights in excess of 15 feet. Some solitary pillarstones have been shown to be remnants of more complex monuments, and it is possible that this one could be the sole surviving portal stone of a destroyed dolmen, or part of an alignment.

Other Ancient Stones in County Donegal:
Ardmore | Beltany | Cloghanmore | Glackadrumman | Gortavern | Kilclooney More | Toome l
