WOODTOWN County Dublin

Hidden from view until one comes suddenly face to face with it, this astonishing megalith looms out of its ferny lair like some prehistoric monster lying in wait for the unwary. Known also as the Mount Venus dolmen, it lurks among the trees on the edge of a golf course 41/2 miles south of Dublin and 1/4 mile east of Woodtown road junction, where a gap in the hedge affords the most direct access.

Gabriel Beranger’s 1781 watercolour of this portal tomb shows it in less claustrophobic surroundings, but no less ruined, with its awesome 45-ton granite capstone slumped against the one standing portal stone, itself broken in two. The other of the pair now lies concealed in the undergrowth. When intact they would have lifted the capstone to a height of 15 feet or more above ground. Some of the less massive stones which formed the chamber were pillaged long ago for building material.

Other Ancient Stones in County Dublin:
Brenanstown | Howth | Kiltiernan
