Céide Fields Visitor Centre

The Céide Fields centre, looking like a modern pyramid, stands overlooking spectacular cliffs on the North Mayo coast. The story it tells, of the Stone Age landscapes preserved beneath the blanket bogs of this part of Mayo, is equally dramatic. The life of this Stone Age farming community, with its stone-walled fields, homes and megalithic tombs, together with their craft skills and spiritual beliefs, is recreated inside the centre, which is dominated by a 5,000-year-old Scots pine tree. Viewing platforms inside and outside the glass-topped pyramid give striking views over land and sea. Audio-visual presentation. Tea room.

8km (5 miles) W of Ballycastle on the R314 Ballycastle-Belmullet road.

From the Appletree Press title: Irish Museums and Heriatage Centres.
