1. Arthur Griffith had been a newspaper editor and a goldminer during his eventful life. He was a founder member of Sinn Fein.

2. Micheál Mac Liammóir was the stage name of Alfred Willmore, whose theatrical talent was not restricted to the stage itself.

3. Lord Castlereagh died 12th August 1822. Arthur Griffith died 12th August 1922.

4. A 16-century coin, a groat worth four pence, which was in circulation in Ireland from 1555-1558.

5. They all three died 13th August; Banim in 1842, Doyle in 1961, O'Brien in 1974

6. Despite the strange spelling, the Fermanagh town of Enniskillen gave its name to two regiments - the Inniskilling Dragoons and the Inniskilling Fusiliers.

7. Linen is produced by processing the flax plant.

8. Bruree (Brugh-righ) in Limerick is derived from the gaelic brugh, meaning 'fort', and righ or meaning 'king' - 'fort of the king'.
