Irish First Names
Adam [Adhamh] (m)
A name of uncertain meaning. 'Red earth' and 'ruddy' have been suggested, but it possibly signifies 'man'. Adam has been quite a popular name in Ireland, where it appears to have been in use from early times. The Hebrews themselves do not seem to have bestowed the name, and its use as a Christian name probably started with the early Irish and Scottish Christians.
