Irish First Names
Art (m) 'stone' or 'bear'.
In England Art is a pet form of Arthur, but in Ireland it constitutes a separate name, though it was at times anglicised as Arthur. Art McMurrough, the medieval king of Leinster, who bore arms valiantly, against the forces of King John, is named Arthur by Froissart. Arthur Griffin (1872-1922), the Nationalist leader translated his name into Irish as Art.
