Irish First Names
Bernard [Bearnard] (m) Germanic, 'bear stern'.
Bernard is used in Ireland to anglicise Brian and Beircheart (the latter is itself originally Anglo-Saxon). It persists to this day, but it is growing less popular. Bernadette and Berneen are feminine forms.
