Downpatrick

Patrick's death is surrounded with legends. Downpatrick, five miles from Saul, to which the yoked oxen bore the saint's body, was considered the traditional burial place of Saint Patrick. Today, historical and church authorities agree that he was buried at the barn in Saul. However, there is a persistent pilgrimage of visitors to a grave in the grounds of Down cathedral. The grave is marked with the word Patric and a simple cross. Visitors pray there even though most are aware that the saint is not buried there.
