Lesser Stitchwort
Stellaria graminea
Lesser Stitchwort is a small perennial. The flowers have five deeply cleft white petals, no longer than the sepals; the anthers are red and the flowers grow in a loose cluster. Seed heads hang down at first, then rise to become horizontal. The leaves are narrow, pointed and stalkless.
This, like the larger Greater Stitchwort (Stellaria holostea), is a common plant in Ireland and grows on light grassy soils, usually not on lime. The plant was given the name Stellaria because of its star-like flowers.
Flowers appear from June to August.
Lesser Stitchwort grows throughout Britain, Europe and Asia.
