Rose Campion
Silene dioica
Coireán coilleach
Rose Campion, or Red Campion, is a tall perennial. The flowers are bright pink and form loose clusters; the petals are cleft. The oval leaves are downy; they grow stalkless, opposite each other on the stems which are also downy. The calyxes are swollen and reddish. This colourful plant grows in good soil in wood clearings, hedge banks and sea cliffs. It is widespread in the north-east of Ireland but much more uncommon in the rest of the country.
The flowers appear in May; bloom continues until October.
Rose Campion grows in Britain, Europe, North Africa and western Asia.
