manger
upright trough (usually constructed against a wall) in which fodder is laid for horses or cattle

march (ditch)
boundary between the fields of neighbours

mercat
market (Scottish)

mercat
cross old cross around which a market was held

meskin
large oblong piece of butter usually around 3lb in weight

midden
dung-heap

near
mean, close, stingy

noggin
wooden container usually used for buttermilk

Ordnance
a department concerned with supply and maintenance of artillery

Pattern
festival associated with a patron saint

piepowder
wayfarer or itinerant

Piepowder Court
ancient court held in fairs and markets to administer justice in a rough and ready way to all-comers

Pillory
wooden frame supported by an upright pillar or post with holes through which the head and hands were put in punishment (abolished 1837)

pound (animal)
enclosure in which stray animals are confined

pot-walloper
person allowed to vote (he qualified because he had a hearth where he could boil a pot of yarn)

pot-walloping borough
status granted by patent by Charles II, entitling a borough to send two members to the Irish Parliament
