steer
a two- to four years old castrated ox

still
apparatus for making alcoholic liquor

stirabout
thick gruel, porridge

stirk
year-old bullock or heifer

store (cattle)
cattle kept for fattening, usually 18- to 24 months old

swing plough
plough without a fore-wheel under the beam (so-called because it could only be turned at the end of a drill by being swung round manually)

tarra
terrible (as in ‘That’s a tarra’)

tenant at will
someone who holds land only as long as the owner pleases

tether
rope for leading or restraining an animal

toll tax
for the liberty of using a bridge or road, selling goods at market etc.

portion of grain kept by a miller in payment for grinding

similar to pillory, but used to punish women

wooden platter

an old instrument of punishment; cart in which prisoners were moved though the streets of a town
