Sensational Discovery

Extracts from the Parish News

The following is retyped from the church news sheet found around or inside the wax cylinder in the Ghostwatch.

St. Malachy's Parish News

31st January 1912

Parishioners,

The Parish has decided to set down a list of items which should be of great interest you, the people of this Parish.

The parish gives thanks for the safe return of the young McSween and O'Farrelly families, back from New York. In the twenty years since they left, they have worked tirelessly, supporting their remaining family back home. They have returned to attend to the family businesses, following the demise of their owner, Donovan Buí, in December last.

The generosity of both families over the years is much appreciated. The newly installed stained glass windows, dedicated to the memory of Donovan Buí, will be blessed by the Cardinal.

Each parishioner or visitor is reminded of their duty, in rendering 1/10 of their yearly income to the church.

The choir will meet on Saturday evening in the church as usual, and anyone who wishes to join may present themselves at 6pm to the choirmaster, Mr Mondegreen. Miss Helena Blunden sang at last week's Confirmation Mass.

The choir is blessed with many wonderful voices, each one a gift from God. I am pleased to include in this month's News a note sent to me by Father O'Donnell from St. Cecilia's:

'The choir is a credit to Mr. Mondegreen, whose dedication to church music is an example to all. Their clarity of tone is impressive, using the acoustics of the space to full advantage, even in the less-than ideal, still to be renovated church hall.

Each member of the choir shows great promise; from the chorus to the soloists, every phrase is audible and separate, leading the listener to concentrate on the prayer behind the music. Without giving way to the sin of pride, I must congratulate Helena Blunden on her fine performance during 'Pie Jesu'. The demands of this piece are considerable, but the coaching of Mr. Mondegreen, and the young lady's considerable talent negate any slight shortcomings in the setting. This young lady is a credit to her teachers, her church and her family. With the proper guidance, she will surely make hearts glad in churches throughout the country.'

Fr. Caractacus O'Donnell,
Head of Music
St. Cecilia's College

The Parish would like any time-served carpenters or joiners to come forward to help with repairing and rebuilding the church hall.

We celebrate 200 years of this Parish in 1912. Through want and hardship, the Church has survived, and helped us all.

Many examples of God's grace are contained in the Parish History, which may be purchased for a modest sum from the Parochial House. Schoolmasters especially are encouraged to buy several copies.

The Parish would like to thank those who contributed to the parish collections over the last month. The total amount raised was £18/14/10. The list of those who did not wish to be included in the Parish may be seen at the back of the church. I trust that this list will grow ever shorter in the coming weeks.

Confessions, baptisms and Masses are at the usual times during the week.

Your prayers are asked for the sick and infirm, those with family overseas, and anyone without work.
