Frequently Asked Questions

What should I expect to see?
In a word - nothing! The webcam is in a little used room with one or two items of print plant. Most people report having seen nothing unusual, though print workers may be seen from time to time. However of over two million visitors a small number have reported strange sightings. Some of these have been so bizarre as to make us think they are just made up. However others do seem to have the ring of truth about them. Visitors should read the accounts of the 'sightings' and make up their own minds.

Does anyone who has been there believe the mill is haunted?
Yes, several. Others have been in that building lots of times and experienced nothing unusual, but none will spend the night there! It is very spooky after dark - especially if you are there alone. However what creaky historic building wouldn't be, especially when the wind blows? Nevertheless we have accounts from workers there who claim that they have witnessed things they believe to be supernatural. They are levelheaded people and their views are honestly held.

Why are you doing this?
It started out as a lighthearted experiment after we were told of the reports of happenings in the building. At first we did not expect to operate the camera for more than a week, however such was the demand that we decided to keep the thing going. We did not really expect anyone to see anything but given that visitors reported various sightings and that the word spread we felt we had to maintain it..

Are you trying to prove that the mill is haunted?
No. Some of us think it might be, others are distinctly skeptical. In any case we are not making any claims. We are interested to find out if there is any convincing evidence. For the record, I belong to the latter group. Though in fairness I should add that there are some who thought it all to be a lot of old guff but are now somewhat more open-minded.

Are you interested in reports of 'nothing'?
Yes, this is very important. We do not want to have a distorted picture and only 'something' reports would give a misleading impression. Go to the webcam.

At night, the machinery seems to be moving. Should it be?
No - this is just not possible. The machinery in the room is no longer connected to the power supply. We have had some reports of movement, but this could not happen. It is probably just a trick of the light.

Why are the lights on all the time?
The fluorescent lights are left on so that the webcam will work. Natural light can illuminate the area through a nearby window. Sometimes when the sun or the moon is in a particular position a shaft of light will enter the room. This can also happen occasionally with the headlights of a passing car. This may account for the perceived motion mentioned above.

Why don't you switch off the lights?
Some people have asked us to do this. We had things this way at the start, but there was nothing to see at night, Irish time. Because many of our visitors are from different time zones the room has to be viewable twenty four hours a day.
