Frequently Asked Questions

Why not replace the clock?
One or two of the printers are superstitious about clocks at this particular location for a couple of reasons. The room remained without a timepiece until some time late in 1994 when a new digital clock was purchased. However, so the story holds, it stopped working within a day. Some even say that it fell off the wall, but we are unable to verify this. This clock was in turn replaced by another which also refused to go for more than a day or two. However other things happened too at the time - there were a number of minor unfortunate events - including the discovery of the dead body of the works cat. It is thought that putting a clock in the room will bring bad luck. [ back to index ]

Is there any connection to Helena?
Perhaps, but it is a long shot. One of the items found in the linen bundle in the summer of 1999 has now been identified as a clock key. [ back to index ]

Could the key have been for the clock in the print room?
This is stretching things. In Helena's day the building was a linen mill, it was only much later that it became a print works. It is just possible that a clock installed during her time may have remained after the change over. However this is pure speculation, especially since there were a few other tenants in the meanwhile. Nevertheless the long arm of coincidence reaches out. The key bears the inscription ‘George Hull and Son, Horologers, Cardiff (or Carduff). Made in USA.' It is known that a firm with a similar name made clocks of the right general type in upstate New York. It is also known that Martin Hinton, a cousin of Helena's, was a clock maker. He had been a member of the notorious X - A.O.H. a breakaway branch of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, and was obliged to emigrate to the United States some time in the late 1890's. Why the key should have been with Helena's possession remains a mystery. We wonder if any of our visitors can cast any light on this? [ back to index ]
